3/1/2024 0 Comments Orange calico tabby cat![]() This is a very loving breed, and most importantly – easy to recognize. Sometimes they are referred to as “patched tabbies” because they are a tabby with patches of cream or red. ![]() If a cat has tabby stripes but combined with a tortoiseshell pattern, the result is known as a torbie. The phrase “torbie” is short for tortoiseshell-tabby, and they were previously called reverse torties. The torbie cat is the rarest of all the types of cat coat colors we mentioned. Tortoiseshells, torbies, and calicos, all belong to a tricolor cat color category. A tortie can also have a somewhat diluted colored coat that’s not as bold and clear, but it is still considered a tortie by definition. There may be some small white spots, but typically, Torties fur is mostly black and red-colored. The only way to be certain is to disregard any stripes in the red or cream regions – simply look if the black color is solid or has stripes. ![]() You can often see stripes on red and cream parts on a solid color cat. It can be somewhat tricky to determine the distinction between torbie and tortie cat coat color. And In the USA, tortoiseshells are commonly referred to as money cats. Today, the Scottish and Irish believe that stray tortoiseshell cats can bring them luck. Even for Celts tortoiseshell cats were signs of good fortune. Interesting tortoiseshell cat fact: In numerous cultures, tortoiseshell cats are considered good luck. Their appearance is a blend of dark brown or chocolate, with shades of red, ginger, or orange mixed in. Since torties are not restricted to any specific breed, their overall coloring typically seems brownish or tawny. If you are an owner, you know what we mean by tortitude.Įxamples of tortie cats: Cole and Marmalade A tortie cat is well known for having an attitude and a distinctive personality. People that own these cats often say that they have “tortitude” to others. Tortoiseshell patterns appear in various breeds, including domestic cats which are not of pure breed. And if occasionally some male tortoiseshell cat appears, it will almost certainly be sterile. Like calicos, tortoiseshell cats are nearly always female. If you have ever wondered about the difference between torbie, tortie, calico or tabby cat, look no further, we are here to fill you in.Ī tortoiseshell cat has a coat that is similar to a specked or particolored tortoise shell. Some have stripes that are bolder/darker than the others, and not all cats have solid stripes. Tabbies, for instance, have a classification of their own. But there is a precise classification for cat coat colors, just like cats are such precise creatures. Cats come in a variety of colors, and to be honest, to most people, they are just grey, yellow, black cats.

I’ve been lamenting that Sony APS-C shooters have been somewhat left out in the cold as of late, but so far 2021 has been a great year for APS-C shooters due to third party offerings from Tamron, Samyang, and now Sigma. The reasonable price point of $549 USD makes this an attainable lens for many who simply can’t afford a lens costing a thousand dollars or more. I could see this being the first upgrade for many photographers, and it could easily be their only lens, too. Colors were good, and I was generally happy with the images I got during my review. The wider maximum aperture gives you more creative options for depth of field than kit lenses or something like the Sony E 18-135mm OSS. The close focus abilities will help it to be a good lens to mount on a gimbal or slider for video work, as on the wide end you essentially can’t exceed the focus limit. You can see from this chart how much smaller and lighter the Sigma is than its competitors. It’s been a winning formula for Tamron, and I suspect that more people will care about having a lightweight, compact lens than will care about a missing AF/MF switch or focus hold button. It has no Optical Stabilization (Tamron 17-70mm does), no AF/MF switch or Focus Hold button (Sony 16-55mm does), but Sigma has instead gone with the early Tamron on Sony route – less premium on the outside to focus on making something premium on the inside while keeping things smaller and lighter. The 18-50DN falls somewhere in the middle it has a nice degree of build including some basic weather sealing, but is rather short on features. At one point it meant “cheaper” in build and price, but Sigma’s recent iSeries lenses falls under the Contemporary line, and they are beautifully made. The 18-50DN will be part of Sigma’s “Contemporary” line, a designator that I’ve complained for years is pretty much meaningless. Sigma 18-50DN Build, Handling, and Features As always, this is a completely independent review. Thanks to Sigma Canada (Gentec) for sending me a pre-release loaner copy of this lens. Does Sigma’s approach to this equation resonate with you? Should the Sigma 18-50DN (as I’ll call it for brevity in this review) get shortlisted as your next lens? You can check out my thoughts in the long format definitive or standard video review below…or just keep reading.įollow Me Patreon | My Newsletter | Instagram | Facebook | DA Merchandise | Flickr | 500px The Sigma’s disadvantage compared to competitors is that it has a slightly constricted zoom range relative to other options, but I do think it compensates by being extremely compact relative to the competitors, and it also retails for a very reasonable price of $549 USD, which dramatically undercuts, say, the Sony 16-55mm F2.8 G. This requires the lens to be versatile, though, a jack-of-all-trades. Lenses like this are a staple for many photographers and can, for some, be their only lens. Despite being beautifully compact, Sigma has packed some excellent optics into this lens. It is only 62mm in diameter, 76.5mm in length, and weighs only 290g. This made for a great slot for Sigma to slide into with their new Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN lens, as it covers this popular zoom range while delivering excellent image quality, a constant F2.8 aperture, and at an extremely compact size and weight. This is, frankly, bigger than what many people are looking for. Yes, Sony does have a premium zoom in this space, but the Sony 16-55mm F2.8 G lens costs a whopping $1400, which is more than what most of the Sony APS-C mirrorless cameras cost! Tamron more recently released an excellent 17-70mm F2.8 VC lens, a lens I reviewed very favorably, but it is also very much on the large side of things at nearly 120mm long and weighing 525g. ![]() Ironically, however, while Sony mirrorless cameras have quickly proliferated with more lens options than I’ve ever seen before, one of the basics missing was this very popular zoom and aperture combination that allows APS-C shooters to upgrade their kit lenses. Low light photography, shallow depth of field shots, and that more professional look where the subject is more isolated from the background. Yes, the price was more expensive, and yes, the lens was a little heavier, but the constant F2.8 aperture opened up so many more photographic possibilities. Before long I ended up where many photographers of that era did – with a Tamron or Sigma zoom that covered a similar zoom range but with a constant F2.8 aperture. It was clunky in operation, had a very slow and limiting maximum aperture range, and was uber-cheap in construction. I entered the world of DSLRs back with Canon T1i, which came with a kit 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS lens. 3/1/2024 0 Comments Rory gallagher musicmaster![]() It even has five Sperzel tuners and one Gotoh tuner, and the 12th-fret dot marker is white plastic rather than the original clay. Hence, broken-striped Tesseras can produce fully striped striped Tesseras, even though their stripe is broken. Thus far, fully striped Tesseras have been produced from parents with some-to-many dorsal stripe breaks. Not unlike very good Striped Motleys, many Tesseras have an interruption of stripe at the girdle ( anatomical location – polar to the cloaca), but unlike Striped and Motley mutants, the dorsal stripe almost always continues to the tail tip. Another 1/3 or so have two to four stripe breaks, and the other 1/3 can have five to 20+ stripe breaks, but those breaks are merely interruptions of the stripe. Roughly 1/3 of all that have been produced so far have no stripe breaks. Even when the stripe is broken, it resumes immediately thereafter (unlike Striped and Motley mutants whose dorsal striping never resumes with any degree of renewal). Predominantly contiguous dorsal striping is the most unique feature of most Tesseras. Even if those three were F 2 s, the likelihood of the mutant patriarch being a Striped Tessera is strong. If these three Tesseras are F 1 s, my deduction is that the striped corn he used in the original pairing was actually Striped AND Tessera. How could these descendants of a Striped corn bred to an Okeetee be Motley types, instead of Striped? It is still unclear if those 2.1 Tesseras were F 1 s ( first familial generation ) or F 2 s (the originator of this line is now out of the hobby and difficult to reach – for clarification). Most appeared to be the most perfectly Striped Motleys ever seen – in so much as their dorsal stripes were nearly contiguous from neck to tail tip (something never before seen in any corn snake pattern mutant) – but that was hardly possible if the admission of the breeder were true – that they were products of pairing a Striped corn with an Okeetee corn. Upon receiving the reverse trio from the seller, we all commented on the mutual peculiarity of the phenotypes. Imagine my surprise in seeing what we thought were nearly flawless Striped Motleys from three different females, only one of which was Het for a recessive pattern mutation? After the first brood of 50% Tesseras hatched from the female that was het for Stripe and Amel, except for the perfection of pattern, I was not thinking new dominant mutation, but when both wild-type Okeetees produced the same results, it was obvious that a new mutation was discovered. My Tesseras were produced by the pairing of the male Tessera to three novel female corns (two F 1 Locality Okeetees from Chip Bridges Rhett Butler Line and one Okeetee-ish female, Het for Stripe and Amel). I produced about 24 TESSERAS ( so named by the Lodrigues for the tessellated lateral markings ) from over 50 fertile eggs, but since the Lodrigues were in the middle of a career move to another State, they were less fortunate, producing just four non- mutant Okeetee -looking corns. In 2008, both the Lodrigues and I independently bred our males (Graham’s and mine) to novel ( unrelated) corns. Profound thanks to Graham, KJ, and Kasi for that gracious and fortuitous gift. KJ and Kasi recommended that Graham gift the extra male to me, and that’s what Graham did. When they arrived, KJ discovered that they constituted a 2.1 reverse trio (two males and one female) instead of the advertised 1.2 trio (one male and two females). In 2007, Graham Criglow asked KJ Lodrigue to order a 1.2 trio of Striped Motleys that were advertised on one of the popular Online Classified sites – since Graham’s job prevented him from personally receiving them at that time. 3/1/2024 0 Comments Wordle nyt app"New York Times Games are a key part of that strategy."
